Private Steroid Injection Therapy

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a group of commonly used painkillers. Anticonvulsants are medicines used to prevent seizures (fits). If you want to check that your medicines are safe to take with your medication, ask your Pharmacist or GP. If you have troublesome side effects, don’t stop taking your medication until your doctor says it’s safe to do so.

  • They’re a man-made version of hormones, normally produced by the adrenal glands (2 small glands that sit on top of the kidneys).
  • Steroid injections are different from the anabolic steroids used illegally by some people to increase their muscle mass.
  • You may also have a local anaesthetic injected at the same time, which allows for temporary pain relief.
  • This initial numbing of the pain will usually wear off after a couple of hours.
  • Recent evidence shows that musculoskeletal steroid injections do not increase your risk of getting coronavirus.

The benefits and risks of the injection will be explained to you in detail. A needle is gently positioned into the affected area and the solution is injected through the needle. A few minutes after the injection you will be examined again.

Rarely a steroid injection into muscles or joints can cause an small indentation (local fat atrophy) in the skin around the area. These changes will usually resolve after a few months and the area returns to normal. Steroid joint injections are injected directly into a painful or swollen joint, or into the soft tissue around it.

Bear in mind that steroids work on your whole body, not just the area you’re injecting into. If you have any questions or concerns about this, talk to the healthcare professional who prescribed your steroids. After this time, it’s important to continue with any exercises given to you by your health professional.

These drugs can have side effects and they aren’t always needed – your hormone levels should gradually recover on their own. Your natural hormone production usually stops a few weeks into a cycle. Some services have specialists in steroids and other image and performance enhancing drugs (IPEDs).

What are steroids and how are steroid injection used?

A range of different steroids exist, some are shorter acting which work almost immediately but they only give short lived relief maybe a week or so. Longer acting steroid take around a week to work but can last for several months. If these treatments do not work, your doctor can prescribe stronger painkillers such as naproxen and codeine. If you need any medical or dental treatment, show your blue steroid card to the doctor or dentist.

This means that generally the chances of any systemic side effects are very rare. If you find the injection helpful with your pain, and other treatments have been unhelpful or are unsuitable, steroid injections can usually be safely repeated. Some injections are used in order to provide a ‘window of opportunity’ to engage in exercise and rehabilitation.

Rinsing your mouth out with water after using your medication can help to prevent oral thrush. Using a device called a spacer with your medication can help to prevent many of the other problems. Please take time to read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine.

Sometimes, though, hydrocortisone from a joint injection can get into your blood. This is more likely to happen if you’ve had several injections. Most people do not have any side effects after a hydrocortisone injection. Side effects are less likely if only one part of the body is injected.

Potential side effects of local anaesthetics

Depending on the condition being treated, it may take 2–4 weeks for your steroid injection to take full effect, and the effects may last for months or longer. Steroid injections are not always a long-term solution, but if your steroid injection was effective for a period of time, your consultant may recommend further injections. Your consultant may recommend steroid injections if rest, lifestyle changes and oral pain medication haven’t alleviated pain. While steroid injections aren’t a long term solution, they can alleviate symptoms to enable physiotherapy to build strength and prevent symptoms returning.

Some steroids occur naturally in the human body and man-made steroids act like natural steroids to reduce inflammation. They are not the same as steroids used by bodybuilders to increase muscle size and strength. A patch of hair loss that is 5 x 5cm may require about 10 to 15 small injections.
